Pursue Your Purpose Only
“And he said to them, ‘Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.’” — Mark 1:38 (ESV)
I was setting my priorities for the new year when my mentor gently told me that I’m often easily distracted by “bright, shiny, new opportunities.” Is he saying I’m like a cat chasing a laser light? I thought.
He encouraged that if an opportunity came up that didn’t fulfill my priorities, I needed to say no. Period. But I’m one of those people who dives into every exciting idea. If it’s a good thing, why not?
Honestly, it can be exhausting. Thankfully, Jesus shows us a better way.
Honored and Chosen by God
“Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should visit me?” Luke 1:43 (NLT)
One of my favorite paintings is Visitation, created by Mariotto Albertinelli in 1503. It depicts the story of Mary the mother of Jesus visiting her older cousin, Elizabeth, who was John the Baptist's mother and a descendant of the high priest Aaron. Rich with theology, the painting reminds me that these women, both recipients of a miracle, were honored and chosen by God for high and holy purposes.
You Have Been Prepared
“But Moses protested to God, ‘Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?’” Exodus 3:11 (NLT)
I don’t like feeling unprepared. There is something in me that wants to cross all my t’s and dot all my i’s. Preparation makes me feel like there is a greater chance of success ahead of me. And I like to be successful at whatever I do.
Dear Burdened: Just Come.
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’” Matthew 11:28 (NLT)
